FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. — The Fayette County Water System and the Fayette County Parks & Recreation Department have announced upcoming renovations to Lake Horton Park, one of the county’s primary surface water reservoirs and a popular recreation destination.

Lake Horton supplies potable water to Fayette County and serves as a year‑round gathering place for residents who enjoy walking, running, biking, fishing, and celebrating events at the park’s two picnic shelters.

Beginning in late October and continuing through the end of the calendar year, Fayette County will refurbish nearly three miles of pedestrian path and resurface all access drives and parking areas within the park.

“Temporary closing sections of the park helps protect the public, the workers and allows for faster construction. Our goal is to and keep at least one of the path segments and boat ramps open at all times,” said Phil Mallon, Director of Public Works.

“By doing this project in-house, Fayette County Water System will save $1.5 million in vendor construction costs," said Vanessa Tigert, Water System Director.

As part of the path improvements, the county will remove select trees whose roots are damaging the pavement. Crews will then mill, regrade, and repave the paths. After paving is complete, new signs, mile markers, and pavement markings will be installed.

During construction, certain sections of the park will be closed to the public. Visitors are asked to observe all posted signage and restricted‑access areas. County officials noted that they will work to minimize disruptions but acknowledged that some inconvenience is expected during the renovation period.

The project is jointly funded by the Water System and a Capital Improvement Project approved by the Fayette County Board of Commissioners. County staff will perform nearly all of the work.

Residents with questions or who would like project updates may contact Public Works at 770‑320‑6010 or publicworks@fayettecountyga.gov.
