SPLOST Project R-28
West Fayetteville Parkway Phase I

The West Fayetteville Parkway is a proposed thoroughfare designed to reduce traffic congestion within the City of Fayetteville by providing an alternative north/south route across the County. The Parkway will provide connectivity between S.R. 85 south (near Harp Road) and S.R. 92 north at Westbridge Road.

To expedite design and construction, the project is planned in three phases. Phase I begins at Cleveland Elementary on Lester Road, proceeds north across State Route 54, and ends at Sandy Creek Road between the Hospital and Hood Road. Phase II will extend the parkway to the north, Phase III to the south. Provided below are answers to some commonly asked questions regarding the project.

  1. How long is the project? Phase I is 1.6 miles.
  2. How many lanes will the new road have? Phase I alternates between two and four lanes, with four lanes provided around intersections to enhance traffic flow. A landscaped median will be provided in areas with four lanes.
  3. What will the speed limit be? The posted speed limit for Phase I will be 45 mph.
  4. Are traffic signals included in this project? A traffic signal is planned for the intersection of the Parkway and State Route 54 west. The signal will be permitted through the Georgia Department of Transportation. As of March 2009, the County is finalizing signal design and coordinating utility relocations.
  5. What is the construction schedule for Phase I? The project should be completed within 18 months. Clearing activities began in May 2008, storm pipe was installed on the north side of S.R. 54 in the first quarter of 2009, and paving is planned for summer 2009. The road should be open for use in October 2009.
  6. What is the Proposed Right-of-Way width? Phase I will have 120 ft of right-of-way. This width is needed to accommodate turn lanes and/or four-lane approaches and departures around intersections.
  7. What is the project construction cost? The cost estimate for Phase I is 6.3 million dollars.
  8. How is the project funded? Phase I is funded exclusively by Fayette County’s transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).
  9. Who is the General Contractor for this project? The Fayette County Road Department.
