Thursday Night Book Group: Thursday, September 16, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. “Wise Blood” by Flannery O’ Connor. When Hazel Motes is released from the army he finds his old home place deserted. Eastrod was the home of his grandfather, a backwoods preacher who always assured Hazel that Jesus was hungry for his soul. Catching the train for the city of Taulkinham, Hazel sets out to prove his conviction, gained in the army, that Jesus and sin don’t exist. In the city, he meets a succession of grotesque characters and seeks his own version of the truth. O’Connor’s first novel, published in 1952, contains many of the elements for which she came to be known—her strong sense of character and voice, her comic vision, and her concern with religious themes.
