Computer Assisted Instruction

The Educational Learning Laboratory (ELL) provides free Computer- Assisted- Instruction in Reading, Math and Science and Writing and Language Arts. The ELL can provide tutorial resources in basic educational skills as well as enrichment resources for students and adults such as tutorials in Spanish, Italian, French, German, English as a Second Language (ESL) and Mandarin Chinese.
Enrollment is by appointment. One hour appointments may be made at the library or by calling 770-305-5341. Lab hours are:
Mon., Wed., Thurs., Fri. and Sat. 10:00 a.m. - 11:55 p.m.
Monday - Friday 3:00 p.m. - 4:55 p.m.
Tuesday-Thursday 6:00 p.m. - 7:55 p.m.
Course Descriptions
The software utilized in the courses is a product of SuccessMaker Software from Computer Curriculum Corporation, which is in compliance with national academic standards.
Reading
READING READINESS: Grades K-1
Builds language and conceptual skills at prereading levels by developing essential
prereading skills.
FIRST ADVENTURES BOOKSHELF: K-2
Develops reading, writing and listening skills in interactive, multimedia literature
experiences.
INITIAL READING: Grades 1-2
Develops comprehension and vocabulary skills using letter identification, phonics
and sight words.
READING ADVENTURES: Grades 3-6
Provides instruction and practice in critical reading skills and strategies;
provides on-line writing activities.
READER'S WORKSHOP: Grades 3-7
Develops basic reading comprehension with an emphasis on higher-order thinking
skills. Skills include word analysis, word meaning, literal comprehension,
and interpretive comprehension.
READING INVESTIGATIONS: Grades 6-8
Encourages the development of a variety of reading strategies, builds vocabularies,
and builds comprehension and thinking skills.
READING ADVENTURES PRIMARY: Grades 1-2
Provides instruction in comprehension, phonics, word study, vocabulary,and reading strategies, using authentic, interactive children's books.
Math and Science
MATH CONCEPTS AND SKILLS: Grades K-8
Comprehensive course on fundamental mathematics. Content includes multiplication,
division, fractions, decimals, equations, word problems, problem solving
and measurements.
MATH INVESTIGATIONS: Grades 5-8
Develops problem-solving strategies and critical thinking skills for real-world
problem-solving competence.
MATH PROCESSOR: Grades 4-Adult
Provides practice in use of spreadsheets, graphs, calculators, and other on-screen
manipulation of data for the purpose of data presentation and comparison.
ALGEBRA TOPICS: Grades 8-Adult
Provides independent instruction in algebra and the tools to build an understanding
of algebraic concepts. Exercises apply problem-solving strategies to practical
situations.
SCIENCE DISCOVERY: Grades 6-Adult
Promotes scientific literacy by creating an environment for students to practice
scientific reasoning and process skills.
Writing and Language Arts
DISCOVER ENGLISH: Grades K-3
Develops language proficiency and conceptual knowledge in English through multimedia listening, read-along, writing and speaking exercises..
STORY PAINTER : Grades pre-K-2.
Encourages creative expression in writing and drawing with interactive tools for typing, drawing, painting and building objects.
WRITER'S STUDIO: Grades 3-8.
Supports student success in each area of the five-step writing process by providing resources and guidance for Prewrite, Draft, Revise, Proofread and Publish.
Adult Basic Education
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Computer-based instruction is offered for Microsoft Windows 95 and 98, Microsoft Word 2003, Excel, PowerPoint and Access 2003 and Windows XP. Please note that each computer skills course requires approximately eight lab hours to complete, except for Windows XP, which requires four hours. Self-paced language lessons are also available on our award-winning Rosetta Stone software for beginning, intermediate and advanced Spanish, beginning, intermediate and advanced French, beginning Chinese, beginning and intermediate Italian and beginning, intermediate and advanced English as a Second Language (ESL). Also offered are beginning Mandarin Chinese and beginning German.
Classes taught by library staff: basic Internet on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. A class about e-mail is offered on the last Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
