Fayette County’s current transportation activities began with the development of the Fayette County Road Improvement Plan. This planning document was prepared in May 1990 by Moreland Altobelli Associates, Inc. and had three objectives:
• To identify and evaluate present and future transportation requirements;
• To provide a 15-year comprehensive road improvement plan; and
• To establish a cost and priority system for transportation projects.
The plan did not identify options for funding and many projects were delayed because of insufficient funding.
With an increasing interest and focus on transportation issues, the 2003 Fayette County Transportation Plan was prepared in Aril 2003 by the URS Corporation. This study focused on accident rates and traffic congestion and outlined a variety of projects with the goal of improving the County’s overall transportation system. The Plan included input from City and County officials as well as participation from the public. Ultimately the Plan was adopted by elected officials with local funding support through a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) referendum passed by voters in November 2004 (see Resolution 2004-09). This five year funding strategy is currently raising revenues for projects within the 2003 Plan.
Since the planning process is a dynamic, changing task, there is a need to re-assess and redefine the needs and goals of the County’s transportation system. As we approach the end of the current five year program, this reassessment and redefinition is necessary to support existing goals and well as define new ones. The new plan, Fayette Forward, will achieve this requirement and assure that communities within Fayette County have the planning in place to meet the needs of today and tomorrow.
