Elections Supervisor Dies

We were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Margaret Malone, our County’s Elections Supervisor, on Sunday. Our community has lost a consummate public servant and a great, great lady. Margaret served our County Government for more than 21 years in a variety of roles. She first worked in the County Commissioners’ Office, later in the Human Resources Department, and later as the County’s Budget Officer. After the retirement of Carolyn Combs, the previous Elections Supervisor last year, Margaret was promoted to the position of Elections Supervisor where she has excelled in keeping Fayette County’s voter and elections processes current with the constant and complex changes in Georgia’s elections laws.
Margaret was an amazing employee. Not only was she highly skilled and knowledgeable, competent, professional, and dependable, Margaret was completely dedicated to serving the citizens of our community and those around her. Those who knew her professionally will quickly tell you that Margaret’s work ethic has been the standard by which they judge themselves and that which makes them strive to improve and excel daily.

But the most admirable personal qualities Margaret Malone possessed far outshine even her work standards. Margaret’s character was beyond reproach. Her grace, her intellect, her sense of humor, her humility, and her constant encouragement of others is a rare combination that made her unique and special.

County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn said today, “We have lost an irreplaceable gem. The void Margaret leaves in our lives will never be filled. To her family and friends, the members of the Board of Commissioners express our most heartfelt condolences. We want them to know that Margaret has indeed left a special mark on our County, both as a public servant and as an incredible human being. It has been an extreme honor to know her and we are forever grateful for her dedication to Fayette County and its citizens. She was the kind of person who made you want to be a better person yourself by just being around her.”

Carolyn Combs has agreed to return to the Elections Office on a full time basis to assist the staff and the Board of Elections in successfully completing the 2006 elections cycle which concludes with the November General Election. We are very grateful to her for making her expertise and experience available to us during this sad but busy time.
