The Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the American Heart Association would like to recognize the heroic life saving actions of Haden Stusak, Shaine Castillo, Maria Yubetta and Kalan Edwards at the Board of Commissioners meeting on June 26th. American Heart Association representative Kim Nickels was on hand to personally acknowledge the life saving efforts of these individuals. Below is a summary of events.
On the afternoon of Saturday, May 31st, 6 year old Haden Stusak noticed his young friend Josiah Budda 5, at the bottom of the deep end of the pool. Haden instantly reacted by swimming to the bottom of the pool and retrieving Josiah’s lifeless body to the edge of the pool. Shaine Castillo quickly reacted by attempting to resuscitate Josiah by performing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques by giving Josiah 2 breaths and Maria Yubetta began chest compressions. Kalan Edwards eventually took over compressions from Maria and Josiah responded to their resuscitation efforts and began breathing on his own and regained a spontaneous pulse.
The Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services promptly responded with Engine 7, Medic 5 and Battalion 7 to a 911 call for a possible child that had drown. Upon arrival, personnel found a 5 year old male in his parent’s arms by the side of the pool conscious and breathing on his own. Fayette County personnel performed an assessment of the child and transported him, with his mother, to an area hospital for further evaluation.
