FAYETTE COUNTY’S EFFORTS TO CONSERVE WATER
SURPASS GOVERNOR’S MANDATE
In October 2007 the state of Georgia was put under a Level IV Drought Advisory which meant no outdoor watering was allowed. The Governor ordered additional water restrictions effective November 1, 2007. Fayette County has actively engaged in extensive efforts to conserve water resources. These efforts have included:
- Placement of information on the County website to educate and update citizens including:
- Links to new and ongoing mandates from the Governor’s Office
- Water conservation education
- Banning of all outdoor burning permits (which recently was lifted)
- Use of Comcast Channel 23 to promote public awareness and provide water conservation information
- Marshal’s office patrols the County on a 24-hour schedule to ensure the enforcement of water use restrictions.
- Formation of a Drought Advisory Committee, 36 city and county business leaders, to develop and promote proactive water conservation efforts throughout Fayette County.
- The Commissioners voted to:
- Participate in the Atlanta Regional Commission’s program regarding the Regional Toilet Voucher Program for Fayette County water customers.
- Lock all irrigation meters and discontinue service on these meters beginning the week of December 3, 2007.
- Approve the acquisition and installation of waterless urinals throughout County buildings saving the County up to 38,200 gallons of water per urinal per year.
- Amendment of County Ordinance establishing a three-tiered fine for watering.
- Insertion of water conservation information into water bills mailed to all Fayette County Water System customers.
- Emergency crews on 24-hour standby to ensure rapid response to any main breaks.
- Discontinued routine washing of county vehicles.
These efforts have resulted in Fayette County reducing water consumption by more than 10% per month as mandated by Governor Perdue. Fayette County continues to explore new avenues of water conservation.
