________________________________________________________________

We are deeply saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Representative Dan Lakly. Dan’s public service career spanned more than 25 years, during which he served as a Peachtree City Councilman, a member of the Fayette County Board of Commissioners and State Representative. Ask anyone who knew him and they will tell you that he worked tirelessly on issues affecting not only Fayette County but the entire state. His vigor and zest for public office will be difficult to replace. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and ask all citizens to keep them in their thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.
Commission Chairman Jack Smith said today, “Fayette County has lost a true servant and friend. Dan was always thoroughly prepared to discuss topics affecting Fayette County and, even if you didn’t agree with him, you usually knew exactly where he stood on the issues. That character trait was a testament to his confidence, his enthusiasm and his zeal for public service. We will not only miss his tenacious representation at the State House, but we will miss the person you could always count on to care mightily about our community and our citizens, both publicly and privately.”

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
Office of the Board of Commissioners
Fayette County, Georgia

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners met on Friday morning, October 19, to authorize the hiring of its first-ever in-house County Attorney.

By unanimous vote, the Board authorized the appointment of Scott Bennett to the newly created position of fulltime staff attorney. Mr. Bennett, currently a resident of Henry County, will leave his position as Attorney for the City of McDonough to begin his job with Fayette County on November 12. He had formerly also worked in the DeKalb County Law Department and has experience as both in-house and outside legal counsel for local governments.

The position of staff attorney was created earlier this year following discussions on whether or not the County could save taxpayer dollars by hiring a fulltime staff attorney. Commission Chairman Jack Smith said, “While we were fortunate to have had a number of excellent applicants for the position of in-house attorney, any of whom could have served our County well, we believe Scott brings to us the mix of experience and qualities best suited for our Board and for our community. We have every confidence that he will be able to provide us with a unique insight from having served both as a plaintiff against and a defense for local governments. The Board is optimistic that this new direction will be beneficial for Fayette County and its citizens and will provide a fresh approach to the county’s legal issues.”
