

Kenwood Park officially opened on Saturday, October 6th. An estimated crowd of 200 people eagerly awaited the chance to tour the new facility and to be the first try out the new amenities.

Fayette County Commission Chairman Jack Smith began the opening festivities at 11:00 a.m. The invocation was led by Frank Oakley, Chairman of the Fayette County Recreation Commission.

Chairman Smith recognized distinguished guests and the many people who made the building of this park possible. Past commissioners involved with the planning of the park were Commissioners Greg Dunn, Linda Wells and the late A. G. VanLandingham. The current commissioners, who recognized this vision and helped it become a reality are Herb Frady, Robert Horgan, Eric Maxwell and Peter Pfeifer. Also recognized was Jack Krakeel, Interim County Administrator.

Also in attendance and recognized for their support were Sheriff Randall Johnson, Senator Ronnie Chance and Representative Virgil Fludd.

The past and present members of the Fayette County Recreation Commission were on hand for the celebration and recognized for their continued support of this project. They are Fred Elsberry, John Felt, Billy Gunnin, Jim Hardy, Charles McCollum, Frank Oakley, Ed Quattlebaum, and Billy Shaw.

Chairman Smith recognized the individuals and firms that were a part of this endeavor. Those involved were David West formerly of Robert and Company, David Jeager of Mallet Consulting, Mass Ana Construction, Trammell-Horton Contracting and C.W. Matthews.

Special thanks was given to Anita Godbee, Director of Parks and Recreation, for her efforts and diligence in monitoring the progress and completion of the part to make the opening day a reality. Also recognized were Tony Parrott, Director of Facilities Management and Greg Ownby, Director of Buildings and Grounds Maintenance.
Commissioner Horgan followed with a few remarks and Anita Godbee gave a brief synopsis on the park’s current and future programs, the reservation and registration process, and extended an invitation to everyone to enjoy the Movie in the Park that evening featuring Charlotte’s Web.

A steady stream of citizens was visible throughout the day playing tennis, basketball, football, and walking the track, sidewalks and trails. Families picnicked under the pavilions and on the shaded lawn.
As the day came to a close, families began staking their claim for seating in front of the 30 foot movie screen featuring Charlotte’s Web. While waiting for the movie to begin, pictures were taken of families and projected on the screen to the delight of everyone.
