Helping the Helpers

The Helping the Helpers program was started in 2001 through a desire from members of the Fayette Co. Department of Fire & Emergency Services to help the organizations and people of our community that provide aid to those in need of assistance. Public safety employees come in contact with people that need assistance and refer these people to organizations within the county that have programs to aid them. This program is a way for employees to help those organizations. Items are distributed to the Fayette Samaritans, Real Life Center and Fayette Co. Youth Home as needed. These organizations distribute the items to people in need, share surplus with other organizations and some may sell surplus items in a thrift shop and use the money from the sales to further assist people in need by buying items needed or providing monetary assistance to those in need (assist with paying bills such as electric, heat, water, etc.). The donated items of food, clothing, toys, personal care items, health care items and household items help many people and families. Members within the department deliver the items to the organizations or to a contact person in the department. The contact person inspects and sorts the items and provides the donator with a list of items donated. The donor receives a receipt from the organization(s) that receive the items.
Between 2001 and 2007 approximately $22,000 in food, $62,500 in clothing, $14,000 in household items, $3,700 in toys, $3,200 in miscellaneous items, $800 in books, $8,000 in personal care and health care items were collected and donated to various organizations.
Employees that need more information or have items to donate may contact Mark Johnson at 770-305-5414.
Public Safety Games
The Public Safety Games are held annually and are sponsored by the Fayette County Department of Parks and Recreation. The games are played between the public safety agencies within Fayette County. Members of the agencies compete off duty in eighteen different events. Points are awarded for first, second, and third place in each event. The points awarded for each event vary. The points are based on the number of players per team in an event and the difficulty level of an event, an example is the 5K race winner is awarded 9 points where the winner of the 1 mile race receives 6 points. The champion of each year’s games is determined by which agencies totals the most points. The champion is awarded the Public Safety Trophy for the year which includes an engraving showing all past winners. The winning agency retains the trophy till the next year’s games. The games are played over a two week period and include flag football, volleyball, softball, golf, tennis and many others. The Public Safety Games provide an opportunity for departments to build camaraderie and moral within, as well as between the different agencies.

Honor Flight Fayette Foundation
The Fayette County Department of Fire & Emergency Services is a proud participant and supporter of the Honor Flight Fayette Foundations by providing medical support for the Foundation.

Honor Flight Fayette Foundation, Inc. is a non profit organization created to honor our WWII veterans. These men and women waited until 2004 to be honored with a memorial dedicated to their courage, honor and valor. Because of advanced age and other difficulties, many have not had an opportunity to visit.
Our organization is dedicated to providing that opportunity absolutely free. We endeavor to fly WWII veterans to see THEIR memorial in Washington, D.C. Making the trip possible for these brave heroes is our opportunity to give back to those who paid the price of freedom. We celebrate their courage, dedication and valor.
