Georgia Solid Waste Management Act

The Georgia Solid Waste Management Act was passed in 1990. The 1990 Georgia Solid Waste Management Act sets two basic goals:

  1. Achieve a 25 percent reduction in the generation and disposal of solid waste; and
  2. Ensure adequate solid waste handling capability and capacity for the subsequent ten year period.

The basic premise of the Act is to educate residential and nonresidential generators of solid waste to reduce the amount of solid waste by the best means possible. These means could include, but are not limited to, source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting. The Act requires all local governments to develop a solid waste management plan. Fayette County and its municipalities developed a joint plan in 1999. The plan is available for viewing at the Fayette County Planning Department in Suite 202B of the Fayette County Administrative Complex located at 140 Stonewall Avenue West, Fayetteville, Georgia.

The Fayette County Comprehensive Solid Waste Plan is also available in a PDF * format. Each of the files is large and may require extra time to download. To speed download times, the Management Act is divided into sections.
