Feed and Forage Testing

Determining feed and forage quality can lead to a more efficient forage-livestock program. The most practical way to determine the quality of feed and forages is through chemical analysis.

The Fayette County can process feed and forage samples for nutrient analysis. Costs for the tests are dependent upon which test is selected. A good forage sample and a copy of the appropriate Feed and Forage Analysis Form (see links below) completely filled out are required.

Hay and silage samples should be submitted in a gallon size zip-lock bag. Total mixed rations, concentrates, grains and vitamin/mineral blends should be submitted in quart size zip-lock bags.

Results in most cases will return in approximately two weeks and can be used to assess quality and to determine amount and type of supplementation needed for the desired level of animal production.
